UNK Art and Design is dedicated to those that matter the most: our students. We embrace the philosophy of "serious play," a balance between academic exploration and informal experimentation.

Our community of students and faculty work together to inspire one another and enjoy the process of creation. Whether in or out of the classroom, our students are engaged in a number of activities any given week. Whether it’s collaborative projects, community outreach, clubs and organizations, or just hanging out with friends, there are many opportunities for experiences and knowledge to be shared.

Our campus prides itself in being an inclusive and safe environment. As a department, we openly embrace and celebrate the diversity of our students’ identities, backgrounds, and ideas. We encourage the interchanging of everyone’s distinct perspectives to create a rich and rewarding experience. Self expression is more than just a work of art, it’s present in our hallways and classrooms every day.

We also promote the idea of needing a break from in-class projects and academic study. Our students have plenty of ways to spend their down time—whether it’s in one of our clubs and organizations, guest speakers, gallery openings, campus events, or just relaxing with some peers in the studio. Some of the greatest creative epiphanies and conversations happen in the evenings where students are free to use the facilities outside of scheduled class times.
