Work by Matt ZiemkeIt has been an exciting week for full-time art lecturer Matt Ziemke. Matt returned earlier this week from hanging a solo exhibition in the Sella-Granata Art Gallery at the University of Alabama. His exhibition, What it is, what it was, and what it will befeatures large-scale ceramic tiles that deal with the artist’s perceptions of landscape and our changing relationships to it.

“I’ve always been very interested in the visual impact of the landscape and how places shape people and civilization,” Ziemke says. “Themes on the tiles range from very topical imagery and text to more abstract inquiries into material and process.”

What it is, what it was, and what it will be is on display at the Sella-Granata Art Gallery from October 6–27.

Matt was also the recipient of a full Research Services Council grant from the University of Nebraska–Kearney which will fund his attendance at two residencies this year: one at the annual Pentaculum event at Arrowmont School of Art and Craft in Gatlinburg, TN and a two-week residency at the Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, MT.
