More – Art instructors exhibit during summer

Artworks by Chad Fonfara, Assistant Professor (sculpture/glass), were selected for three juried exhibitions during the summer; the Kansas Artist Craftsmen Association- Members Exhibition, Moss-Thorns Gallery, Ft Hays, KS., Ft Hays University, KACA Material Mastery Exhibition, Moss-Thorns Gallery, Ft. Hays, KS, and the Academia Invitational, Museum of Nebraska Art, Kearney, NE.. In addition, Mr. Fonfara attended the 39th Annual Glass Art Society International Conference held in Corning, NY during the summer break.

Victoria Goro-Rapoport awarded Pratt-Heins

victoria goro-rapoport Victoria Goro-Rapoport, associate professor in the Department of Art & Art History, is a 2009 recipient of the Pratt-Heins Award for Scholarship and Research. Goro-Rapoport has exhibited widely, and has been recognized with top prizes at a number of prestigious, juried exhibitions (read more). In the awards announcement, Pratt-Heins Foundation trustee, Tom Tye II, said “As with many UNK distinguished faculty in scholarship and research, she is also a very gifted teacher and mentor to her students. Her students, peers, the university and our community are the fortunate beneficiaries of her multiple talents.”

In addition to the award recognition this fall, Goro-Rapoport is featured in the cover article of the most recent issue of New Frontiers, a publication of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. A photo of the cover, and links to the publication, are currently on the front page of the UNK web site. Congratulations to Victoria.

Art instructors exhibit during summer

Several works by Mark Hartman are currently featured in the Museum of Nebraska Art exhibition Pushing Paint. The show will run through September 20, 2009. The Museum described this exhibition as being “comprised of a handful of artists who are true ‘painter’s painters.’” The invitational exhibition, which began on May 23rd, highlights the work of a select group of non-representational artists from Nebraska.

Derrick Burbul’s photo exhibition, Road Through Nowhere, was displayed at the Governor’s Residence Exhibition in Lincoln, Nebraska from July 29–August 28, 2009. Earlier this year, that exhibition was displayed in the Walker Art Gallery on the UNK campus. The photograph, Sign to Nowhere, was exhibited last spring in the exhibition, Something About Nothing, at the Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery at The Ohio State University at Marion, Marion, Ohio.

Derrick Burbul’s Road through Nowhere in Walker Gallery

UNK assistant professor and photography instructor, Derrick Burbul, is exhibiting documentary photography works in a one-man show entitled Road through Nowhere. The show can be seen in the Walker Art Gallery until February 13th.

Goro-Rapoport award winner at several juried exhibitions

UNK Assistant Professor of Art, Victoria Goro-Rapoport, has exhibited in over 150 juried art shows across the United States since 2000, and has a long list of awards for her work. In 2007 alone, she won First Place in the 2-D category at the National Juried Art Exhibition, a Honorable Mention at the Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition (Peoria, IL), one of the oldest and most prestigious shows for works of drawing and print, and the Stella Drabkin Memorial 1st Prize Award of the American Color Print Society in it’s 63rd Open Exhibition (Cheltenham, PA). Goro-Rapoport’s work was selected for the Best of Show Award at the 6th Annual Art Inter/National here and abroad Competition of Box Heart Notification (Pittsburgh) and at the Bold Expressions All Media Exhibition in Carmichael, California. During 2007, she won a dozen other top prizes and honors in exhibition competitions.

Professor Schuessler awarded Pratt-Heins for Service

Professor Richard Schuessler was cited for his art direction on three books published by UNK, Prairie Mosaic, The Presidential Visit of William Jefferson Clinton and From the Beginning—the UNK centennial book. Prairie Mosaic was chosen for Library Journal’s “Notable Document List” as one of the top 25 international works of 2000. The UNK centennial book earned a regional Silver Addy Award.

Pratt-Heins Award winners must demonstrate consistent, outstanding service to UNK students, to the university, to education in general, and to significant state, regional or national education programs. Pratt-Heins Trustee, Tom Tye II, said “this year’s recipient has given countless hours to UNK, as well as to local and statewide organizations.”

UNK Art Faculty Exhibition at MONA from Jan. 27 to April 8- January 28 2007

This biennial exhibition at the Museum of Nebraska Art features recent artwork by current and emeriti faculty members of the University of Nebraska Kearney’s Art and Art History Department. These artists work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramic, and mixed media.
The exhibition is made possible by a generous gift from the Rob and Carol Cope Charitable Trust.

Welcome back art students, faculty, and staff

Classes for the 2006-07 academic year begin on August 21. Special welcome to Clint Carlson (VCD), Chad Fonfara (Sculpture), and John McKirahan (Art History); new faculty members in the Art and Art History Department this semester.

All VCD students are encouraged to attend the First AIGA meeting set for Thursday, August 24th at 7:30 p.m. in Room 302 (near the copy machine).

A mandatory meeting for VCD students will be held after the Labor Day break.

The Art and Multimedia computer labs (rooms 310 & 311) will be open during evening hours (7 to 12 p.m.) starting on Monday, August 28th. Bookmark the Art Department MacLabs website (http://art.unk.edu/maclabs/) now to find hours, help, or lab updates throughout the semester.

Full time, tenure track position beginning August 2006. Completed Ph.D. strongly preferred, college-level teaching experience essential. Small class sizes, emphasis on contact with individual students. Seeking an Art
Historian with specialization in Western art in any period after 1700. Teach second half of the art history survey, art appreciation, and rotating upper level courses in 19th century, Modern and Contemporary. Opportunity to teach critical perspectives course and online graduate courses for M.A. in Art Education. Interest in developing non-western survey a plus. Candidate must have strong scholarly agenda that will lead to presentations and publication. Departmental responsibilities include advising art history majors. AA/EO/ADA.
